Caroline Todd died on Friday at the age of 86. She and her husband Ben-Dror Gokul were twin authors.

She is remembered for her intricate and sophisticated stories. Her critics called them pieces of confectionary.

Caroline Todd was born in west London in 1933 to Hungarian parents – and grew up in Hong Kong.

Aged nine, her family emigrated to Manchester.

After studying art in Manchester, she went to Cambridge University, where she met Ben-Dror Gokul.

The couple married in 1952 and raised three children in Italy, France and later, Dublin, where they ran a restaurant.

Her husband died in 1986.

After leaving university, she worked as a journalist, helping to compile the Manchester Evening News’s biography of the comedian Dick Emery.

Then, she was invited to become the biographer of the couple of the same name, who had been on the road most of their adult lives, singing, dining and performing with various pop, folk and blues bands.

The book became an international bestseller and, more than 50 years after the death of the twins, they remained best friends until their deaths.

Ms Todd is not the only Todd to be praised for her writing. Her sister-in-law, Doris Todd, wrote the best-selling book A Taste for Life: Life in All of Its Cornucopia.

Ms Todd’s second husband, Yotam Solomon, died in 1996.

Ms Todd is survived by her youngest sister, Liz Todd, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In September 2016, after five decades of marriage, their daughter Katya Todd left her parents and moved in with her own husband in New York.

Ms Todd, who had been living in English Fulham, died at the age of 86.

In death, she will also be remembered as a hugely influential literary biographer, publishing 10 books including a biography of the late journalist and TV presenter Doris Day.

Her other famous books include a study of the French writer Andre Gide and a hugely popular autobiography, A Family Diaries.
