Couple selling off $676M worth of art to break up after nearly 5 years of divorce

A New York businessman and his wife have agreed to part ways after all, selling off around 2,000 pieces of art, one of the largest ever celebrity-related art sales, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Stefan Persson, the CEO of Sports Authority, which filed for bankruptcy in August, and his wife Birgitte, a fashion and jewelry designer, are also selling off the homes they owned in New York, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Rhinebeck, N.Y., according to The Post.

The pair are also selling off about $500 million worth of business assets and intellectual property, including Persson’s stake in the Swedish fashion brand Diesel.

Persson and his wife have asked the court to approve the transactions.

The art sales total nearly $676 million and so far have received more than $473 million. Part of the money will go to their five children.

According to the Post, the Andersons were expected to part ways at least five years ago, when they tried to divorce in Sweden. U.S. law makes it more complicated to finalize a divorce, raising the price of the art sales.
