Listen to “Becoming Cousteau” this week for a preview of new episodes of “Distant Horizon” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.”
In “Becoming Cousteau,” Annalise Cousteau, granddaughter of explorer Jacques Cousteau, gets interviews with the late explorer’s son Paul, his son Thierry, his grandson Philippe and science writer Marlo Thomas. The result is an honest, intimate look at the world of the contemporary oceanographer.
O’Donnell reveals to “The Last Word” audience that he was especially impressed with the way the Cousteau clan candidly shared the secrets of their lives.
“Before we decided to do this show I set it up as an academic curiosity, which I think turned out to be great and moving and fascinating. We started with them and we let them play,” O’Donnell says. “The thing is that we learn more from each other than we do from each other.”
O’Donnell sees “Becoming Cousteau” as a clear indicator of the oceanographer’s evolution into the bigger thinker it is now.
“Having all of those in one hour and sharing who they are and what the world we live in is, I think, a dramatic moment,” O’Donnell says.
