Leaders from North Dakota took another step to their long-dormant effort to erect a statue of President Theodore Roosevelt in what’s known as Little Canada.
President Roosevelt, who led the Roaring 20s from 1901-1909, served as a U.S. senator from New York for four terms, then served one term as U.S. president from 1901-1909.
A full-sized replica of the statue has already been erected in his honor on New York’s Roosevelt Island.
The statue-building effort began under former Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R-SD), who raised nearly $6 million in private donations, after his family agreed to fund the statue. The statue would be placed on the Foundation for a Unified Memorial to Theodore Roosevelt at the North Dakota Museum of Art, in nearby Dickinson.

In a new interview, Daugaard told The Dickinson Press that the statue’s work has included “an awful lot of vetting and going back and forth with museums and other archives to see whether there’s something like this, what’s it about or can we find pieces.”
The foundation will now raise an additional $7.5 million, according to the newspaper.
“So far we’ve been working pretty smoothly and the only issue is finding the money. There hasn’t been an overwhelming demand from all around the world but people are excited,” Daugaard said.
The Theodore Roosevelt Foundation in New York City has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar up to $7.5 million in donations to the Foundation for a Unified Memorial to Theodore Roosevelt.

“Whether I can actually raise that money and do it, who knows,” Daugaard said. “We have done studies. We’ve done mock ups. I look at it as a playground in the future. I’m not looking at it as a money pit. We’re really talking about what we’ve done and maybe what else we can do.”
